·
Mr. Beirne called the
meeting to order at 10:11am.
·
The Minutes from the
December 13, 2007 SAC Meeting were unanimously approved.
·
Mr. Beirne mentioned
that the recommendation to have all the CTE classes at JRTC instead of having
some of them at AHS and CHS was not looked on favorably by the educator
advisory committee. The committee was concerned
about losing slots for the programs that they currently have at their
schools. There was also concern from
the EAC about how the move would affect the perkins funding for AHS and
CHS.
·
Mr. Spangler went over
the Skills USA district competition results.
Nine JRTC students are eligible for the state competition in Hampton on
April 25th and 26th.
·
Mr. Spangler went over
the HOSA state competition result from this past weekend in Richmond. 10 students competed in the competitions and
six awards were earned by these students.
·
Mr. Beirne mentioned
that the curriculum at JRTC will remain the same for next year. At this time no new programs will be added
and no current programs will be cut.
·
Mr. Dodrill asked if
JRTC gave tours to students. Mr. Beirne
replied that we give the ninth grade students at AHS & CHS tours so that
students can see what classes are available to them at JRTC once they become
sophomores. We have just given the AHS
ninth grade students tours last week and we will give the CHS ninth grade
students tours next week. Mr. Dodrill
mentioned that it would be nice to get JRTC involved with getting information
about JRTC programs out to the middle school age students.
·
Mr. Beirne mentioned
that Alleghany is looking at getting their eighth grade students involved in
CTE programs at JRTC during fourth block time.
·
Mr. Beirne mentioned
that the CTE money looks safe for now but other areas like construction funds
are in jeopardy. Money is tight at this
time for the state and localities. This
is one of the reasons for not being able to offer any new programs at
JRTC.
·
Mr. Beirne asked the
council to get nominations to him for the Switzer Award.
·
The skills Advisory
Council & Joint Board of Control Dinner will be held on April 17, 2008 at
6:00pm in the C.E. Darnell Conference Center.
·
Mr. Beirne asked
everyone for ideas of a guest speaker at the joint meeting on April 17,
2008. Mr. Kleppingers name was
mentioned as a possible speaker.
·
Mr. Beirne asked if
anyone had any other items to talk about.
·
Ms. Holcomb mentioned
that the last 112 workers will soon be unemployed from Parker Hannifin and
AET. There is also going to be a need for
a large amount of skilled pipe fitters and millwrights at the mill plus other
positions like welders.
·
Mr. Barbour mentioned
that they are going to be in need of an electrician at the hospital.
·
Mr. Dodrill mentioned a
career fair with AHS and CHS that will be held this Friday, March 7, 2008
starting at 9:00am.
·
The next meeting will be
a dinner meeting with the JRTC Joint Board of Control on April 17, 2008 at
6:00pm.
·
The meeting adjourned at
10:32am.
Respectfully
submitted
