· Mrs. Hammond called the meeting to order at 12:20pm.
· The Minutes from the October 18, 2007 SAC Meeting were unanimously approved.
· Mrs. Hammond presented information about career pathways. She read and discussed a PowerPoint document that was handed out to the members. The career pathways initiative is working to get all levels of education including post secondary and lifelong learners, like apprenticeship, along with industry and employers working together to best prepare people for their careers.
· Mr. Beirne mentioned the desire to get CTE classes back at the Middle School level and possibly have the students receive credit for the classes they take. He is talking to Giles County about a program that they are doing in their schools.
· Ms. Holcomb would like to see employer involvement with these students. They could be guest lecturers and teach certain sections of technology to the students with hands on learning.
· Field trips to businesses were discussed. These field trips would give the students a look into the businesses so that they can see what types of jobs are available.
· Ms. Bryant mentioned that it would be good for students to receive information about how the different levels of education correlate with job opportunities and their earning potential.
· Ms. Holcomb mentioned that CSX is going to be recruiting locally and that there is going to be an orientation.
· Ms. Hammond mentioned that it would be good to have the CTE programs from both AHS & CHS at JRTC. Alleghany has agriculture & technical drawing classes. Covington has principles of technology classes. If these programs were at JRTC they could be shared by students from both school systems.
· The Skills Advisory Council asked the JRTC administration to check into housing all of the CTE classes at JRTC.
· Mr. Beirne informed everyone that the house, which the carpentry and building trades classes were working on, was sold for $36,500.00. It will be moved out within the next two months.
· The skills USA organization will host up to three of the district competitions this February. The host for this years district competition is AR Burton. All Students who qualify in their competitions will then participate in the state competition at the end of April in Hampton. All students that win the state competitions go to the nationals in June held in Kansas City. The last student that we sent to nationals was two years ago. Layne Harmon won the state welding competition and was a top ten contestant in the national competition.
· Mr. Beirne mentioned that the third year welding students just finished their NOCTI (National Occupational Competency Testing Institute) post-test. All sixteen of the seniors in the class passed with a score above the national average to receive the credential.
· The next meeting date was not set at this time.
· The meeting adjourned at 1:10pm.
Respectfully submitted
