Welcome:  Members of the Skills Advisory Committee were welcomed to the meeting with a Breakfast that was prepared by the Culinary Arts students.

Mr. Beirne introduced Wayne Strickland Executive Director, Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission. Mr. Strickland spoke about the organization he represents and the new project being developed for the promotion of CTE. Mr. Strickland spoke for 30 minutes.

After answering questions Mr. Strickland left for another meeting.

Mr. Beirne introduced two new members; Betty Morris, Asst. manager First Citizen bank and Clara Moseley retired executive secretary Alleghany County Schools.

Mr. Beirne opened the floor for nominations for chairperson. Tamera Ross nominated Clara Moseley. Mrs. Moseley declined and Mr. Beirne pointed out it would be difficult for a new member to hold this position. Mr. Beirne was asked by the group to asked Mrs. Hammond if she would be willing to serve in this capacity again. Mr. Beirne said he would contact Mrs. Hammond.

Mr. Beirne handed out the enrollment report for JRTC. Comments were made to the effect the schools enrollment has increased. The programs are full. A discussion was held on the possibility of adding an additional program. Mr. Beirne responded that all new programs can only be added if several factors are met and the Joint Board would need to approve a new course.

Kathy Holcomb wanted to let the group know of an employment shortfall in our area. A construction company working for Westvaco was in need of carpenters. As of this morning, the void was not being filled by people looking for work with the VEC.

Further discussions centered on the baby boomers starting to retire and the void that will and has started to create in the CTE world of employment.

Mr. Beirne said he would contact everyone as to the next meeting. The group was asked to look at their calendars and plan on the meeting being held sometime the first two weeks of December.

Being no further discussion and the need for members to leave for other obligations, the meeting was adjourned.

Submitted Friday October 19 Mr. Beirne
