MINUTES

                                                                                                                          

 

February 17, 2009

 

 

            The Joint Board of Control for Jackson River Technical Center held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 in Conference Room A of Jackson River Technical Center with the following members present:

 

                        David Halsey, Chairman                       Alleghany County

                        Stacey Bryant                                       Alleghany County

                        Randy Tucker                                       Alleghany County

                        Cindy Bryant                                        Covington City

                        Rebecca Rhea                                      Covington City

            Danny Warlitner                                   Covington City

 

Also present were Dr. Bob Grimesey, Administrator; Mr. Eddie Graham, Superintendent of Covington City Schools; Mr. Glenn Spangler, Director; and Mrs. Sue Wolfe, Deputy Clerk.

 

Mr. Halsey called the meeting to order and led members in a moment of silence and the pledge of allegiance to the flag. 

 

PRESENTATION:

            Mr. Spangler introduced Mr. Tom Hamelman, Culinary Arts teacher to the Board.  He reported that Mr. Hamelman was recognized  for successfully completing all training required by ServSafe and earning exemplary scores in Instructor Certification.  Mr. Spangler presented him with a JRTC Excellence Award certificate for the aforementioned and for his commitment to keeping the public safe.

 

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:

            Mr. Halsey requested that everyone read the minutes of the January 20, 2009, meeting to check for additions or corrections.  There were none, and he declared the minutes approved as submitted.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS  (09-37):

Adult Education.  Mr. Spangler informed members that the following adult evening classes are being conducted:

 

            ServSafe

            Protect Your PC

            Welding – two sections

            MS Word/Excel

            Introduction to Computers & Applications

            Understanding and Upgrading Your PC

            Basic Residential Wiring

 

First Semester A & B Honor Rolls.   Mr. Spangler presented the Board with copies of the A and B Semester Honor Rolls.

 

Skills USA.   Mr. Spangler reported that the following students placed from 1st to 3rd in the District Skills USA competition:

            Josh Horn                       Computer Maintenance Technology (Post Grad)           1st Place

Monthly Administrator’s Report.  Mr. Spangler told the Board that February is Career & Technical Education month.  The theme this year is Building Blocks for a Successful Career.  He invited everyone to the Open House on Wednesday, February 25, from 9:00 until 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 until 2:00 p.m.  The event is being advertised through the Chamber of Commerce website and the newspaper.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

            Approval of JRTC Plan  (09-38).  On motion by Mr. Tucker, seconded by Mrs. Stacey Bryant, the Board unanimously approved by aye vote the Jackson River Technical Center Biennial Plan 2009-2010.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

            Approve Skills USA State Conference Field Trip  (09-39).  Mr. Spangler requested permission for members and advisors of Skills USA to compete in competition in Richmond at the end of March.  Mr. Tucker moved to approve the overnight field trip; Mrs. Cindy Bryant seconded the motion; and the motion carried unanimously by aye vote.

 

            Approve Substitute Teacher  (09-40).  Mr. Warlitner moved that Guy Russell Richards be approved as substitute teacher as requested by Mr. Spangler.  Mr. Tucker seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

 

PAY BILLS  (09-41):

Mr. Warlitner reviewed the bills.  He moved that bills in the amount of $20,647.30 be approved for payment.  Mr. Tucker seconded the motion for payment, and the Board unanimously approved payment by aye vote.

 

Salaries and benefits in the amount of $115,850.84 for the January payroll were paid in accordance with approved salary scales and fringe benefits.

 

ADJOURNMENT:

            Mrs. Stacey Bryant moved to adjourn the meeting; Mrs. Cindy Bryant seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.  The meeting was adjourned at 12:45 p.m.
